This study analyzes the impact of illegal activities on the conservation of forest and wildlife resources in the Messica Community, located on the outskirts of Casa M’sika Lodge, in Manica Province, Mozambique. The main objective was to identify the types of infractions, their locations, and the motivations of the local population. The methodology combined
bibliographic and field research, featuring a sample of 685 residents, along with interviews with managers and community leaders via the Delphi technique. Data were processed using SPSS (v. 13.0), while the mapping of critical points was conducted using GPS and ArcMap (v. 10.1) software. The results revealed that the primary illegal activities practiced
within the reserve and along the Messica River are: Poaching (45.4%), Agriculture (26.6%), Illegal fishing (21.0%), Logging (7.6%). The identified causes for these practices are poverty and the pursuit of monetary income (greed). Shrubby vegetation and
riverbanks were identified as the areas under the greatest pressure. The study recommends the direct involvement of the community in the surveillance and management of the area, promoting awareness of the ecological and economic benefits of conservation. Furthermore, it suggests modernizing inspection efforts through technological means,
such as monitoring software and drones, to optimize the detection and prevention of environmental crimes.
